LACHUTE | This Tuesday, June 3, at 10 a.m., a profound sense of emotion filled Barron Park. At the invitation of the Carrefour des femmes d’Argenteuil, in collaboration with La Citad’Elle of Lachute, the community gathered in a moment of reflection, remembrance, and resilience during a commemorative vigil in tribute to women who have been victims of femicide in Quebec since the beginning of the year.
The event, marked by respect and solemnity, emerged from a collective shock following the recent femicide of Patricia Lynda Thériault, which occurred in our own community. Patricia, 47, was a kind and radiant woman, deeply appreciated by those around her, and she leaves behind a painful void for her loved ones. Her memory was at the heart of the testimonies shared that morning.
“This empty white chair in front of you… it speaks volumes. It symbolizes absence — a woman who should be here today,” said one participant, pointing to a solitary chair placed at the front of the gathering. The white chair, now a powerful symbol of loss, represented all those whose lives were taken by violence.
In a silence heavy with meaning, participants lit lanterns in memory of those who were silenced. A moving speech delivered on behalf of the Carrefour des femmes denounced violence against women as a social failure and a collective emergency. The names of the victims were read one by one, each name echoing as a call for justice and action.

A tribute filled with love and grief
The testimony of Nathalie, a close friend of Patricia, moved many to tears. In a heartfelt message, she spoke of her friend’s kindness, generosity, and unforgettable smile:
“Patricia was a gentle strength, a generous soul. This empty chair is filled with our light. She will continue to live in every breath of wind, in every glimmer of light…”
Several people traveled long distances to be present, including Pierre, a family friend who came to show his support despite the pain of loss. Martine, a representative of the Carrefour des femmes, emphasized the importance of supporting one another and thanked La Citad’Elle for its solidarity in organizing the vigil.
A symbolic balloon release for those we will never forget
To close the event, a symbolic balloon release took place. Each balloon carried a message of remembrance, hope, and promise — a promise never to forget, and above all, to continue taking action.
The Carrefour des femmes and La Citad’Elle reaffirmed their commitment to offering listening, support, and guidance to all those experiencing situations of violence. This morning’s event was far more than a commemoration — it was a powerful call for solidarity, justice, and change.
“Because the next one is still alive.”
